Become a Volunteer

2011 has been a difficult year for many of our children. Nationwide, we receive reports about children being murdered, kidnapped, sexually abused, tormented by predators, abandoned and even neglected by their parents and/or family members. In Louisiana alone, a child is abused every 48 minutes.  For their own safety, many of these victimized children are removed from their homes. Such removal is often traumatic, and is just one more terrible blow that these children have to bear.

Standing tall in the face of such a hard life is a cadre of volunteers – appointed by  Juvenile Court Judges as Special Advocates. CASA volunteers hold a special position in helping to resolve the many complex challenges facing these troubled children. A CASA volunteer offers a child trust and advocacy during complex legal proceedings. Interacting and explaining to the child what is going on, the CASA may be the only stable and continuous presence in his/her life..

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), of New Orleans, is an agency which advocates on behalf of children (birth to 18) who have been judged victims of abuse and/or neglect. Although CASA is a volunteer position, the duties carried out by a CASA are extremely important. Along with a sincere commitment, volunteers must be responsible, articulate and mature. No special education or skills are required. Thorough training and continual support is provided.

Are you ready to become one of these special people?

Requirements are:

  • Minimum age of 21
  • Background checks,  no arrests, abuse or neglect issues
  • Minimum 10 hours a month volunteering
  • At least a one year commitment as a volunteer
  • 30 hours of specialized training

If you have the heart and the commitment, join this select group of CASAs and represent a child’s best interests; interact with families, foster parents; appear in Juvenile Court; coordinate with the child’s school, therapists, social workers and more.
